Storage Eden Park Health and Safety Policy
Storage Eden Park is committed to providing a safe, healthy and secure environment for our employees, customers, contractors and visitors. This Health and Safety Policy sets out the principles and procedures we follow in our storage facilities and during any associated removals and handling activities.
We aim to prevent accidents, protect health and minimise risks arising from our operations. Health and safety is an integral part of how we run our business and support our customers when they move, store and access their belongings.
Policy Aims and Objectives
The objectives of this policy are to prevent injury or ill health, protect property and maintain safe and efficient storage and movement of goods. We will identify hazards, assess risks and implement sensible control measures. We also aim to promote a positive health and safety culture, where everyone understands their responsibilities and acts with care.
This policy applies to all areas of Storage Eden Park, including storage units, internal and external access routes, loading bays, reception areas and any vehicles or handling equipment used in connection with our services.
Management Responsibilities
Senior management has overall responsibility for health and safety within Storage Eden Park. Management will provide clear leadership, allocate resources and ensure that this policy is implemented, communicated and reviewed regularly. We will plan our operations to minimise risk, particularly where lifting, loading, unloading or transporting goods is involved.
Managers will ensure that safe systems of work are in place for storage and removal activities, that employees receive suitable training, and that appropriate equipment, protective measures and supervision are provided. We will monitor health and safety performance and take corrective action where required.
Employee Responsibilities
Every employee has a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions or omissions. Employees must follow all safety instructions, use equipment correctly and cooperate fully with measures introduced to control risk.
Staff involved in removals, manual handling or operation of lifting and transport equipment must use safe techniques, never bypass safety features and immediately report any hazards, defects, incidents or near misses to management. Employees must not misuse or interfere with any equipment or safety provision.
Customer and Visitor Responsibilities
Customers and visitors share responsibility for maintaining a safe environment. Everyone using our storage units or attending our premises must follow the safety guidance provided by staff, observe signage and behave responsibly in and around the facility.
Customers must ensure that any goods they bring onto the premises are packed, stacked and moved safely. They must not block access routes, fire exits or loading zones. Individuals should take care when lifting or carrying items and seek assistance where loads are heavy, bulky or difficult to manoeuvre.
Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices
We assess risks associated with our storage and removal activities and implement control measures to reduce these risks so far as is reasonably practicable. This may include planning safe access routes, limiting loads on shelving, defining maximum stacking heights and establishing procedures for loading and unloading vehicles.
Risk assessments are reviewed periodically and whenever significant changes occur in our operations, premises or equipment. The findings of risk assessments inform our training, signage and operational procedures. Employees and contractors are expected to follow these procedures at all times.
Manual Handling and Use of Equipment
Manual handling activities are carefully managed to reduce the risk of injury. We encourage the use of appropriate handling aids for heavy or awkward items and provide guidance on correct lifting techniques. Staff are trained to assess loads before moving them, avoid overreaching and reduce unnecessary lifting.
Only trained and authorised personnel may use mechanical handling equipment such as pallet trucks, trolleys or lifting devices. All equipment is maintained in a safe condition and checked regularly. Any faults or concerns must be reported immediately so that equipment can be taken out of service and inspected if necessary.
Safe Premises, Security and Housekeeping
Storage Eden Park strives to maintain clean, orderly and well lit premises. Walkways, stairways, corridors, ramps and loading areas must be kept clear of obstruction. Items must not be stored in a way that creates tripping, falling or collision hazards. Where changes in floor level, low ceilings or other fixed hazards exist, they will be clearly marked.
We maintain appropriate security and access controls to prevent unauthorised entry and to protect people and property. Fire exits are kept unlocked and clearly marked while the premises are occupied. Fire detection and other safety systems are tested and maintained in line with our procedures.
Hazardous Substances and Prohibited Items
For the safety of everyone on site, hazardous, illegal or dangerous substances and goods are not permitted in our storage units or vehicles. This includes flammable, explosive, corrosive, toxic or pressurised materials, as well as goods that may leak, contaminate or otherwise endanger people, property or the environment.
Customers are responsible for ensuring that goods placed into storage or moved through our premises are safe and suitable. If in doubt about any item, customers must ask our staff for guidance before bringing it on site.
Emergency Preparedness and Incident Reporting
Emergency procedures are in place to protect people in the event of a fire, accident, security incident or other serious event. Emergency exit routes are clearly marked and kept clear at all times. Staff are trained in evacuation procedures and in how to assist customers and visitors during an emergency.
All accidents, injuries, dangerous occurrences and near misses must be reported promptly so they can be recorded, investigated and, where necessary, used to improve our controls. We encourage open reporting and do not tolerate any form of victimisation for raising health and safety concerns.
Training, Information and Policy Review
Storage Eden Park provides training and information so that employees understand their responsibilities and are competent to carry out their roles safely, including any element of removals or goods handling. Induction training covers key aspects of this Health and Safety Policy, and additional job specific training is provided where needed.
This Health and Safety Policy is reviewed at regular intervals and when there are significant changes in legal requirements, business activities or premises. Revisions will be communicated to employees and made available to customers and visitors on request. Our aim is continuous improvement in health and safety performance across all aspects of our storage and handling services.
